Cafe Radar

November 2025

When I first moved to hawthorne, I wanted to go to know where all the best cafes were. My main method of search was google maps and yelp, but the problem with that is the search isn’t granular enough for what I want. There are many cafes that are well rated, but I was looking specifically to sit down with a laptop, a coffee and some food for several hours. Many highly rated cafes don’t serve food, or only serve croissants, or have no seating. I would have to scroll through the images and reviews for each cafe before I found something I wanted.

While the process is fun, it’s tedious when I feel that I’m wasting time that could be spent at the cafe. I made cafe radar to solve that problem for myself. I scrape all the cafes in my area and all their reviews, then break them down into tag:score ratings. Then I can search for cafes with a high food, latte and seating rating and sort through those. Or if I’m craving matcha and a lazy reading afternoon, somewhere with matcha and good seating.
